This year we say goodbye to members of staff. Ms Elayne Mc Dermott is taking early retirement after many years in Sligo Grammar School. In the main Elayne was a teacher of PE and Geography, but for a period of time she ran the Learning Support Department in SGS. She was the person who set up The Lodge which is the centre of the SEN Department in the school, and so laid the foundations of our very successful SEN programme.
This term the Transition Year class raised an incredible €8,051 for the North West Hospice as a result of the 5km walk/run which took place at Doorly Park on Saturday 14th May. The aim of this fundraiser was to create awareness of the work the Hospice does in our community and contribute to that priceless work. The TYs were joined by students from other years as well as staff and friends of SGS, and they set up an “i donate” page
Our TY Green Schools Committee have had a very productive year and the whole group should be very proud of their many achievements. Litter and Waste was the first theme they chose to deal with, and they tried to find ways of eliminating litter and reduce waste output in the school. They organised recycling and general waste bins for the school and tried to instil in our school community a sense of pride and personal responsibility for the issues of
On Thursday 19th May the class of 2022 celebrated their last day of class. In the morning the sixth years were treated to breakfast in the dining hall followed by the now traditional Students/Staff soccer match. This year victory went to the Staff! A game of rounders was also played and, again, the Staff team came out on top. The afternoon saw the obligatory fun-and-games around the school grounds before they went home to get ready for the evening. The class
On Saturday 14th May a group of SGS students and staff dedicated their Saturday morning to a 5k fundraising run. The run (or walk) was organised by the Sligo Grammar School TY class as a fundraiser for North West Hospice. The students co-ordinated with Park Run, Sligo and organised a fundraising drive, getting sponsorship for the run and setting up an “i donate” page to make it easy for their friends and families to donate to this very worthy cause.
Last May SGS launched a Whole-School Art Project to mark the impact of Covid-19 on the life of the school. Everyone in the school bought into the project and the finished work can now be seen on the staircase wall. Ms Hynes, who managed the project, submitted the work to the Arts in Education Portal, the key national digital resource of arts in education in Ireland. On Monday 25th April the work continued with first year students, accompanied by TY students, undertaking a “Walk for Water” along the Garavogue River from Sligo town to Doorley Park.
